Abu Dhabi — the capital of the UAE — is a city that often lives in Dubai’s shadow for international tourists, yet those who make the journey 140km down the highway invariably leave impressed. Grand in scale, deeply rooted in Emirati culture, and home to some of the world’s most extraordinary architecture, Abu Dhabi offers a distinctly different flavour to its more flamboyant northern neighbour.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is quite simply one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. The fourth largest mosque on earth, it can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers and features 82 domes, 1,000 columns, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Entry is free for non-Muslims, and the mosque is particularly magical at night when its white marble glows under floodlights.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the finest art museums in the Middle East. The stunning Jean Nouvel-designed building on Saadiyat Island features a magnificent perforated dome that creates a magical rain of light effect inside. The collection spans human civilisation across cultures and centuries.

Yas Island

Yas Island is Abu Dhabi’s entertainment hub and home to Ferrari World — the world’s largest indoor theme park — housing the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest roller coaster. Yas Waterworld and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi complete the island’s extraordinary entertainment offering.

Qasr Al Hosn

Abu Dhabi’s oldest building and the former residence of the ruling family, Qasr Al Hosn has been beautifully restored and transformed into a museum telling the story of Abu Dhabi from a small fishing settlement to a global metropolis.

Corniche Beach

Abu Dhabi’s Corniche is one of the finest urban waterfronts in the Middle East. The 8km beachfront promenade is beautifully maintained with gardens, cafes, and designated swimming areas. The Blue Flag certified beach is excellent — clean, well-managed, and largely free from crowds.

Getting Around Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is largely a driving city. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. Car rental is the best option for visitors planning to spend several days exploring.

Final Thoughts

Abu Dhabi is a genuinely world-class destination that rewards those who make the effort to visit. From the sublime beauty of the Grand Mosque to the adrenaline rush of Ferrari World, the city has something extraordinary for every type of traveller.
